Something like the Dell XPS 17 is a better "on the move" 17-inch laptop, unlike the Blade Pro 17, which is meant to be utilized plugged in and at a desk. When running moderately demanding programs, I would say the fans were more audible than average. This machine is one of the top performers and one of the most portable 17-inch gaming laptops, all wrapped up in a premium metal build. We run two different 3DMark subtests, Sky Diver and Fire Strike, which are suited to different types of systems. Other titles may push even closer to 300fps, but either way, the machine can clearly make use of a screen that can show more than 144fps. Although Razer has been using this refreshed chassis since April 2019, it's a great choice. In this test, we loop a video—a locally stored 720p file of the same Tears of Steel short we use in our Handbrake test—with screen brightness set at 50 percent and volume at 100 percent until the system quits. Cinebench is often a good predictor of our Handbrake video editing trial, another tough, threaded workout that is highly CPU-dependent and scales well with cores and threads. After fully recharging the laptop, we set up the machine in power-save mode (as opposed to balanced or high-performance mode) where available and make a few other battery-conserving tweaks in preparation for our unplugged video rundown test. For graphics and CPU, Razer is offering up to an NVIDIA RTX 2080 Super (Max-Q) and a powerful, eight-core Intel Core i7-108750H (Turbo Boost to 5.1GHz). The PC space has been slowly catching up to Apple in the sound department, and I have always thought Razer's were near the top in the Windows world. (We also turn Wi-Fi off, putting the laptop in airplane mode.) Cinebench stresses the CPU rather than the GPU to render a complex image. It remains sleek, feels high quality, and presents no weaknesses. On paper, the Blade Pro 17 with an eight-core Core i7-108750H processor stacked on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super (Max-Q) should deliver impressive performance, so long as the thermals match the output. Razer's laptop touchpads remain for me the best Windows touchpads out there, coming closest to Apple's beloved MacBook solution. Far Cry 5 and Rise of the Tomb Raider are both modern, high-fidelity titles with built-in benchmarks that illustrate how a system handles real-world gameplay at various settings. Differences in chassis and thermal solutions account for why a theoretically more powerful processor may slightly underperform, but ultimately the head-to-head here doesn't matter too much. The 2020 Razer Blade Pro 17 comes in three configurations, two with an RTX 2080 Super Max-Q and one with an RTX 2070 Max-Q. © 1996-2020 Ziff Davis, LLC. We run them at 1080p resolution at the games' medium and best image-quality presets (Normal and Ultra for Far Cry 5 under DirectX 11, Medium and Very High for Rise of the Tomb Raider under DirectX 12). I would like to receive news and offers from other Future brands. On Doom: Eternal and Destiny 2, you can undoubtedly game at full 4K on high graphics settings while doing around 70 to 90 frames-per-second (FPS) depending on the scene. Overall, Blade Pro 17 is a significant milestone. Less understandably, the Blade Pro 17 did not surpass the other Core i7 chips (except on Photoshop), but the margins were very slim. While there is a new full HD option (non-touch) with a jaw-dropping 300Hz refresh, I think the 4K panel is the better choice, save for the $600 price increase (which also double storage to 1TB). Running PCMark's synthetic Time Spy Stress Test, which loops through twenty-five times in a row to measure framerate stability, the Pro 17 passed with an excellent 98.4 percent. Not much of a performance dip at all for multiple runs. Keep an eye on your inbox! For those shopping in the high-end segment but still seeking a more reasonable price, the Editors' Choice Acer Predator Helios 700 delivers a desktop-like experience. Accuracy in mousing is particularly good, and I had no issue with palm rejection when typing. There is some good news, however, as Razer is now using infra-red facial recognition with Windows Hello for fast, seamless logins to Windows 10 without needing a password. Of course, you should expect good things in this price range, but pure value is likely a secondary concern if you're shopping in this price tier.
